Prestashop 1.4+ includes a very useful module called “Import/export a theme” which offers the ability to install a new theme without need to connect to the FTP.
Just go to your back office, Modules tab, find this module – install and configure.

Now you have to prepare your new theme which should be packed in a ZIP file. (All themes from Prestastyle are packed this way)
The installation process is very self-explaining. In the end do not forget to change the theme in “Modules” > “Theme“.
If you had any trouble feel free to post a comment here. I’ll do my best to assist you.
The next part shows the theme installation for older Prestashop versions 1.2 or 1.3
Let’s suppose you have just downloaded a new theme called “NEW_THEME” for your PrestaShop. Now – how to bring it to the real life? Here’s a short list of steps which need to be done.
- move the theme file “NEW_THEME” to “your_shop/themes”
- apply the theme in the Back Office “TAB preferences/appearance” – “NEW THEME”
Sometimes that’s all you have to do. Although if you have downloaded a more sophisticated theme with special modules follow these instructions:
- if there are modules included in your downloaded theme, move them to “your_shop/modules”, replace if needed
- verify in back office “TAB modules” wheter the new and the replaced modules are installed
- if there exists any special order of modules, set the correct position in “TAB modules/positions” – sometimes, you have to even “transplant module” – for instance when you need to move a module from right column to the left column
It may happen, that something is still wrong and you can’t see the desired result – in that case:
- delete all files (except index.php) from “your_shop/tools/smarty/compile”
- delete all files (except index.php) from “your_shop/tools/smarty/cache”
- refresh your front office
Hope it helps!
